Chapter Thirteen

H arper felt a little awkward getting out of John’s official car in front of the bookstore, but hey, people were going to talk no matter what. If her family had gotten used to it long ago, she certainly could. Mainly, she felt safe and secure with John around, and she didn’t mind admitting it.

Harper mulled over whether to discuss Gwen and Lewis Morgan with John. Before she came to a decision, Maura texted, answering that very question.

Gwen and Lewis left Wales for the U.S. two weeks ago. I suspect they went to visit Diane in Blueberry Bay and the trail is cold after that. More later.

Taking a deep breath, Harper forwarded the text to John. If the Morgans were in Steepwick, that would explain a lot of things—maybe Evan Davies’ murder and this new weird assault on her peace of mind. Plus, if that duo had magical powers, that could explain the tapping at her window and the scent Einstein had picked up in the corner of the yard.

Now, with this new information, Lola’s offer to be her roommate for a while sounded pretty good. She sent her a text: I’ll take your roommate offer until I leave for NYC. I need added witch-power in my house.

The Morgan siblings had ties to Evan Davies in Wales, business and personal.

Again, Harper sent it on to John. She hoped he didn’t get annoyed with her for passing this along, especially if he already had this information, but sometimes Maura’s sources were faster than international police cooperation.

She took a deep breath and forced herself to refocus and continue placing her orders. Maeve stopped by for a chat about their joint business venture, and the rest of the day went by without any further drama. On her way out, Maeve invited her and John over for dinner to meet her new interest, Allen Meadows, the luxury soap multi-millionaire.

Not having heard from John at all, she texted him that Lola would stay with her until they left for their trip. Finally, he texted back at the end of the day. “Sorry, been out and about. Got your messages, will call you tonight.”

Relieved that John had responded, Harper said goodnight to Julie and prepared to go home with her new roommate.

“Come on, Einstein, no long walk right now; we need to go to Lola’s house so she can pack a few things.”

Before they left, Lola stopped at the bakery counter and put four éclairs in a box. “I feel a grimoire
